What is Giftedness?

Giftedness is when a person is assessed as being talented in the top 3% of intelligence or ability in a particular area (i.e. verbal, spatial, mathematical or talents such as music, athletics and art). There is a large variability within the 3% of ability in terms of personality aspects, social capacity and athletic ability therefore there is no “typical” gifted person.

However, there are some common areas that gifted individuals may struggle with, such as social skills, emotional intensity, anxiety, existential depression, sensory overload, and overwhelming educational choices.  Children and adolescents that are gifted may benefit from counseling to assist them in these areas.
